SMN BARKA POWER COMPANY SAOC

SMN Barka Power Company SAOC is the Oman operating company behind the Barka II Independent Water and Power Project, popularly known as Barka Phase 2, located approximately 50 km northwest of Muscat. The plant has a design net rated capacity of 673.5 MW in combined-cycle mode (363 MW in open cycle) and a water production capacity of around 26.4 MIGD (120,000 m³/day) from a reverse-osmosis desalination train. Barka II entered full commercial operation on 15 November 2009. SMN Barka is owned by SMN Power Holding Company Limited, a consortium of Engie (France), Mubadala (Abu Dhabi) and National Trading Company of Oman, and contracts operations and maintenance to Suez Tractebel Operations and Maintenance Oman (STOMO). In 2024, SMN Barka secured a nine-year water supply extension from Nama PWP.

Like other Omani IWPPs, SMN Barka operates with a compact workforce at the plant site supported by a commercial and corporate team in Muscat. External engagement cadence includes Nama PWP technical meetings, lender site visits, shareholder board events, insurance renewals, and regulator interactions with Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Diam and PAEW.
