Sohar Aluminium LLC is Oman's sole primary aluminium smelter, a 375,000-tonne-per-annum facility at Sohar Industrial Port Area, 40% owned by OQ, 40% by Abu Dhabi's TAQA, and 20% by Rio Tinto (which also licenses the plant's AP36 reduction technology). The plant produces aluminium billet and standard ingot, feeding downstream extruders in Oman (Oman Aluminium Rolling, Synergies Castings, Gulf Extrusions) and export customers across Asia and Europe. Sohar Aluminium runs a captive 1,000 MW gas-fired power station and a state-of-the-art potline, employing roughly 1,000 direct staff plus a sizable contractor population during pot-reline and major maintenance campaigns. The plant has been a cornerstone of Oman's industrial diversification since it came online in 2008.
